Getting rid of the post-holiday blues: how to help employees return feeling refreshed after their holidays

What are the post-holiday blues?
‘The happiness hormones that our brains produce during the holidays through positive stimuli disappear as soon as we return to “normal” daily life,’ says Evelien van Kollenburg, Psychologist at HumanCapitalCare. This temporary decline in motivation, energy and concentration after a holiday may only last a few days, but for some it can last for weeks. ‘The cause often lies in the contrast between the relaxed holiday rhythm and the obligations and hectic pace of the workplace. Things like an overfull mailbox and unfinished tasks can also contribute to a rough start.’ That is why Evelien is pleased to offer a few tips for a softer landing after the holidays.
Tips for returning to work with energy
- Tie up any loose ends before you go on holiday
A tidy inbox and clear handover will help you return to work feeling relaxed, without falling behind straight away. - Keep doing the things you enjoyed during your holiday
Did you go for lots of walks during your holiday, for example? Then carry on doing that at home. This will help you maintain the balance between work and leisure time. You can also start planning new outings to look forward to. - Reassess your ‘must-dos’
This applies to both your work and your private life. Is it really necessary to do certain things? Can you make them more enjoyable?
- Go outside, even if the weather is bad
Daylight, fresh air and exercise are always good for you and boost your mood.
- Block off time in your diary
Set aside time for emails, focused work, (mini) breaks or even a short walk. This will help you stay calm and organised.
The role of managers
Apart from what employees themselves can do to return to work feeling energised, managers also have an important role to play in supporting them in avoiding and alleviating the post-holiday blues. ‘A soft landing starts with having the space to ease back into the swing of things,’ says Evelien Van Kollenburg, Psychologist at HumanCapitalCare. ‘This could include flexible working hours, fewer meetings in the first week and time to get up to speed.’
According to her, the communications department can also play an important role. A motivational message on the intranet or an inspiring campaign can help employees return to work with fresh energy. ‘Especially after the holidays, it’s important to encourage positivity and connection,’ says Evelien.
This period also offers an excellent opportunity to draw attention to vitality initiatives. For instance, you could offer tips on exercising, nutrition and sleep, or organise a short energiser or team walk. Finally, Evelien emphasises the importance of staying alert. ‘If the post-holiday blues seem to last longer than a few weeks, then there’s usually something structural going on. Watch out for signs of excessive workload and encourage managers to keep talking to their employees. This will make late summer a period of renewed energy rather than a difficult restart.’
